Cherry Blossoms And Teenagers

cherryblossom91

Cherry blossom time in DC is one of the most gorgeous times of year here. It brings people from all over the world to sit and have an intimate picnic lunch with their family and three million of their closest friends.

cherryblossom93

It is also the start of spring break -  and the girl and Christine; they had plans. Big plans – sleep overs, shopping, manicures…

cherryblossom97

But Miss Shannon wanted to go see the cherry blossoms and so did I. This is the most flattering picture I had of myself, the wind was brutal that day. Miss Shannon on the other hand looked cool and beautiful.

cherryblossom921

It started out innocently enough, after the cherry blossoms we were going to shop! At least that was the promised plan. So the girls relented to my pleas and agreed to go with Miss Shannon and me downtown.

cherryblossom94

I think they sort of had fun. But the mall was calling…yes the mall…

cherryblossom96

But first, the Jefferson Memorial. It was a wind tunnel there. I didn’t notice this guy was staring until I edited this photo. Back off buster.

cherryblossom98

Miss Shannon and I wanted to take a bus tour around Hains Island because we hadn’t seen it before. It’s getting late and the girls thought we were taking the bus to go back to the metro stop. When they found out we weren’t, the girls started to protest and editorialize.

“Why are we looking at more flowers?”
“It’s getting late, we won’t have time to shop.”
“What was the point of that?”

This little puppy loved the bus tour.

I then decided that if there was to be any peace, we would have to ditch Miss Shannon somewhere in downtown DC because she wanted to see more flowers. And we wanted to shop.

cherryblossom99

We were weaving through hundreds of people. I said “Look at that cute bus girls!”

Uh huh.

cherryblossom991

“Look! The Bureau of Printing and Engraving!”

Uh huh.

cherryblossom992

“The Smithsonian! How beautiful!”

Not even an acknowledgment from the girls. They were on a mission to find the metro stop.

cherryblossom993

When we got the metro stop, we see this…a thousand people trying to get into the metro…yikes. I turned to the girls and said, “Hang on. Stay with me.” I wanted to sound confident and competent because they can smell fear. I then proceeded to cut in front of 1000 people. The girls were small and fast. And they wanted their manicures. We got through the metro and to our final stop in twenty minutes.

I think those people are still standing in line.

cherryblossom994

Whew.

cherryblossom995

And we finally got our manicures.

cherryblossom996

And after a new pair of shoes, a couple of shirts, and some bracelets later…our fondue. So glad to oblige.

Too bad the boy was in Texas last weekend. I know he would have loved to look at the cherry blossoms with Miss Shannon and me.

Cherry Blossoms And Reconciliation

cherryblossom5

The Cherry Blossom Festival occurred last weekend in Washington DC.

cherryblossom7

The festival was represented by a myriad of cultures and ethnic celebration.

cherryblossom4

I love going to downtown DC because it’s such a beautiful city.

cherryblossom8

The cherry blossoms bloom every year and every year a horde of tourists descend on DC. Many of the four-legged persuasion.

What I really find interesting about this event is what the cherry trees represent.

cherryblossom3

They were a gift from Japan as a token of reconciliation and friendship. It’s of particular interest to me because I lived in Japan for three years and both my children were born there. I have a special place in my heart for Japan.

cherryblossom9

And I have a special place in my heart for Washington DC. It is an absolutely magnificent city, representing an absolutely magnificent country.

cherryblossom6

How can these two great countries be staunch allies and friends after the World War II, after Horoshima, after Pearl Harbor.

Yet we are. I think that is lost in all the rhetoric of today’s current world affairs.

It was nice to spend the day and be reflective. The cherry blossoms were beautiful. Tomorrow…I’ll tell you how much teenagers love cherry blossoms.

The Day I Almost Missed

dolphin6

I’m hooked on dolphins.

Had I spent the day on my own on a deserted island, I would have missed one of the most memorable days of my life.

dolphin8

Along for the ride with the schools of fish we plucked from the ocean were pods of dolphins.

dolphin1

I think they were Atlantic Bottle Nosed-Dolphins.

dolphin4

These may be porpoises…

dolphin5

But whatever they are, they were beautiful…

dolphin3

Most of the time, I photographed the ocean, but sometimes they will swim into my field of view. And I was thrilled.

I will never forget the day that I almost missed.

If I Only Had Twelve Shots

Shutter Sisters site asked today, what if you only had twelve shots?

Well, until I received my camera as a wonderful gift, I would think about it quite a bit. I now have the luxury of shooting over a thousand pictures before I had to worry about storage room. And I would too.

Our little point and shoot had broken. I had dropped it on the floor so last summer while in New Orleans, we bought a small Kodak disposable camera. It had 16 pictures and I chose my shots carefully.

orleans2

I didn’t know how they would turn out. No preview, you know.

orleans94

Just a small, very small, trust that what I saw would translate to what my camera would see.

orleans92

Our view from our hotel room was gorgeous and I couldn’t really capture it well with the disposable but I’m so glad I have this picture anyway. The bend in the Mississippi is straight out of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn. Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer could be fishing anywhere along this river.

orleans3

Some didn’t turn out so well. But I like this picture anyway…

orleans91

What did I save my last picture for? This one, in front of Ann Rice’s house in the Garden District. If I had my Nikon then, I would have been all over the houses there, they were so gorgeous. But I’m still happy for the pictures I have. After all, they were captured with an amateur’s eye, savoring every memory whether it be digital or analog.

Holy Mackerel

holymackeral2

My idea of the perfect Florida trip is laying on the beach all day with a good book and lots of sunscreen. The family’s idea of the perfect trip is fishing. They wanted to fish for Spanish mackerel off the shore, at a place where the migratory fish are in abundance. Where there’s an abundance of migratory fish, there’s also an abundance of sharks. Anyway, I asked they drop me off at a deserted island and come get me later.

holymackeral91

And there it is. The dock where I would unload and spend a glorious day of doing nothing. This is the only way to get on this island but lo and behold, it was too shallow to dock. They said “I guess you have to come with us mom.”

I guess so. Good bye peace and quiet.

holymackeral8

I was disappointed at first but got over it when I saw how much fun the kids were having catching fish. Every single time they put their poles in the water they had a bite.

holymackeral6

Here’s the very handsome Chase,  son of BBFs Bruce and Tracey.  He’s only 16 years old and he is a better seamen than most men. He fishes and handles the boat like a pro. This is the biggest fish I’ve ever seen  a human being catch.

holymackeral92

No…the biggest fish is this one the girl caught and BFF Bruce had to take off the line for her…

holymackera92

Or wait…it’s this one that the boy caught.

holymackeral5

Look at the boy’s line bend. It’s a big un.

holymackerel94

It IS a big one. The biggest one…

For those of you who are fish aficionados, I know that’s not a Spanish mackerel. That’s a blue fish. Even better for fish tacos. We did catch mackerels too.

holymackerel95

There’s one right now that pretty girl is holding. Watch out for their teeth Jackie-girl.

holymackeral9

Here’s a mackerel whose tail was taken off on the way up. I told you there were sharks down there. No swimming today.

holymackeral4

Once again, God makes a decision for me that I could not have made on my own. Like bringing in a storm and making the sand bar higher so I can’t go off on my own to a deserted island…

holymackeral3

And miss all the fun of watching a pelican take Chase’s fish.

holymackeral1

We literally caught over 40 fish that day. The girl counted them. Two got away, sort of.

I’ll show you how I cleaned the fish later today. I’ve done it before…you don’t want to miss it. But first I have to mop the floor. I gave the maid the day off today.

Palm Tree Break

florida94

I have been working on a project all day and my bottom is really sore.

florida93

I thought you might like to see a palm tree or two. I know I did.

Hope it’s warm where you are.

Good-bye.

Out Of The Cold

The kids had a four day weekend last weekend…Martin Luther King Day and the Inauguration and all…

florida3

The husband asked me if I wanted to go to Florida during their break.

florida92

I said “What about work?”

florida7

“Who is going to teach my classes?”

florida91

“What if I can’t find a substitute?”

florida6

“What about the animals?”

florida8

“I’m just too important to leave at the last minute…”

florida2

The husband tagged me for the party pooper that I am.

florida1

So last Saturday, off to West Palm Beach and to the hospitality of our gracious friends, BFF Bruce and BFF Tracy.

It was 4 degrees when we got up last Saturday morning.

florida4

It was 65 degrees on the Intercoastal. The husband was really happy.

And you know what? So was I.

Back in Baltimore yesterday, I stepped off the plane to 30 degree weather…brrrrr.

Ghost Skier

ghostskier5

My kids are fascinated with ghost shows and ghost stories.

ghostskier2

They love these pictures of ghost skiers.

ghostskier3

Here I am, captured on a lift, a lone ghostly rider.

ghostskier4

They say many people capture images like this, and make other people believe they have seen a ghost.

ghostskier1

After I saw the above picture, I purposely set out to capture more ghosts. My camera was set on auto mode with the ISO speed set at 1600. The focal length was set at 200mm. I laid the camera on a ski rest and when a skier (ghost) went by, I clicked it. It gave me these images with the snow (mostly) in focus but the people out of way out of focus. This exercise also gave me another fun “Ding-now-I-get-it-moment” about my lens that I’ll share another time. It also kept me entertained as I waited at the bottom for the family to find their way out of the fog.

Skier’s Paradise – Day 2

2skiday93

Day 2 of our ski vacation is really Night 2. We got to the mountain late because we had to visit with family, nothing like family encroaching on our ski time. The mountain was near deserted, perhaps because no one else but us really wanted to risk life and limb.

2skiday1

On this night, I was determined not to be left out so I threw my skis on and hopped the lift. I wasn’t sure how I was going to ski down the mountain holding my camera but I would figure it out when I got up there. I was riding with the girl and was snapping away, which made her very nervous and worried we may not make the jump at the top.

2skiday96

She ditched me the rest of the night and rode with her dad up the lift. We’re here! Tips up!

2skiday2

I made it off the lift in one piece and our next decision was…

2skiday4

which run to take. See the black diamonds? We didn’t take those.

2skiday5

Lost and Confused Adolescent Teen Daniel has an interesting technique,

2skiday6

and the boy’s pants kept coming down, causing him to constantly hitch them up.

2skiday8

I tucked both poles in one hand and had my camera in the other. It was the epitome of sports photography.

It was also a blue hill…

2skiday7

Anyway, I followed everyone down and truly, most of the pictures didn’t come out. Hey, give me a break, I was skiing and taking pictures at the same time…at night.

2skiday991

But I did get some pictures like this…

2skiday99

And this…

2skiday97

And this…notice the girl is the only one standing…

2skiday98

At least it wasn’t foggy…

2skiday92

and finally, there’s the lodge. It’s big and beautiful…beckoning us with some hot chocolate and French onion soup.

2skiday94

We skied until the lifts close again.

2skiday9

And even when it closed, the boys walked back up the bunny hill to slide down on their boards.

2skiday95

“Excuse me sir, but you are going to have to leave the mountain now.” It’s a good thing it’s just my little – um big – nephew. It’s good to know people in high places. He’s working there this winter.

In spite of the cold and ice and expense, I really love to ski. I’m glad that the kids are taking to it too. I’m not a speed demon nor do I do moguls, I just love being out in the cold and going downhill. Call me strange. Although I know the inherent risks involved, I think you can still enjoy the sport if you do it like you drive, defensively. That being said, I did dislocate my knee and my shoulder as well doing this…that’s another story all together. I didn’t say I was a great skier.

Thanks for letting me share. Can’t wait to do it again.

Ice And Fog – A Skier’s Paradise

skiday2

We were all pretty excited about our first ski trip of the season. Granted we weren’t skiing in Aspen or Steamboat or Telluride so the conditions were somewhat of a crap shoot. Every year we go to Elk Mountain in northern PA. It’s also only about 20 minutes from my parents’ home where we have a free place to stay and Chef Nanna to cook us great food. You can’t beat it.

Lost and Confused Adolescent Teen Daniel came with us again so we had three Lost and Confused Adolescent Teens along with the dog and the cat.

It’s where I learned to ski. My first ever trip up the mountain was on the wrong ski lift and I ended up coming down on my butt on a black slope. I don’t know why that didn’t deter me from ever skiing again, but I have more tenacity than smarts so to speak.

skiday9

And I’m glad I didn’t give up. Because the kids really enjoy the experience. Most of the time they even like to ski.

skiday91

The last couple of years, the boy wanted to ditch his skis for a snowboard, it’s cool you know.

skiday4

The girl does ski and pretty well. Although she says “jumping horses is my thing, not skiing.” She was also suffering from a head cold all weekend.

skiday3

But she was a real trooper. She was out there all night, both nights, unlike yours truly. We strapped her to skis when she was 7 years old and now she doesn’t fall at all. She’s kind of a delicate skier, every part of her is dry.

You can’t tell she had a head cold. She’s a pretty tough chick.

Next year she wants to start snowboarding, like her brother and his friend.

skiday1

I told her that snowboarders spent a lot of their time on their butts, like the boys here. They were soaking wet by the end of the night.

skiday6

But I think she feels confident enough now to try something new.

skiday93

We skied at night so as to avoid the crowd. There were very few people on the mountain, we were skiing with an elite group of not-so-smart-skiers. We had about an hour of daylight, then the lights came on and it was a totally different atmosphere.

skiday95

The fog started to come in. The kids loved it

skiday92

because it apparently made it even more fun. They said they couldn’t see a single thing at the top of the mountain. Fun? Apparently.

skiday94

The husband was not innocent in this craziness. That’s him, on the very left of the picture, doing his best to set a bad example.

skiday8

There’s the girl…

skiday7

coming out of the fog, straight at me. I’m sure she knows how to stop.

Where was I in all of this?

skiday96

Well, I was sitting in the lodge with a glass of wine of course. I did say that I learned to ski on this very mountain as a teen-ager. I also dislocated my knee pretty badly when I was about 16, on this very mountain. I was taken down the mountain by medics in a stretcher-sled-like thing. Now as a middle-aged woman, my knee will sometimes talk to me. It was talking to me this weekend and it was saying “Don’t do it.” I listened for the first night but the second night…well, I couldn’t sit and watch everyone else have fun.

All these pictures were taken from the bottom of the mountain. Tomorrow, I’ll show pictures from the top, yes, I went to the top with my camera, at night, with a bum knee, on icy northeast ski conditions.

The husband isn’t the only one setting a bad example.
