Almost Done

almostdone1

Last week, my new man was back doing his thing in the bathroom. Now that’s a statement if I ever heard one.

almostdone2

This is how a pilot does tile, very precisely, very carefully, very anally, and with attention to detail; it’s almost second nature to them. It’s a matter of life and death and that sensibility is brought into everything they do, even laying tile.

almostdone5

This is what it looks like now, I love it! I just finished painting the wainscoting. (I’m not sure if that’s what it’s called. It’s the paneling that goes halfway up the wall.) The husband just asked me what color I painted it and I told him a very very light shade of lavender/gray. Or basically, white.

almostdone4

I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel. Here’s the new tub,

realitycheck6

it replaced this old derelict thing. Ugh that was awful. So glad it’s gone.

almostdone3

Next thing to go is this wall paper. I painted over it with an awful yellow. The color looked great in the hallway but not so good in the bathroom where the light was different.

This is what I’m going to do. I’m going to tile over the entire wall above the wainscoting and the walls behind the bathtub – and I really need your help.

My question is: Do you like this tile?

almostdone6

Take your time. Be truthful. I can take it.

almostdone7

Here’s another look.

almostdone8

And another look still…

For the record – I like it, the husband doesn’t like it, the kids say “Yeah, I guess so.”

You are breaking the tie. My home is in your hands.

Update: Just for fun, I’m adding a poll…he he. Sorry for those of you who came already!

Hi and oh, what beautiful tile business your man does! :) I love how your floors turned out! Now I love those glass tiles. You can add pops of color with your towels and accessories! Oh, make sure you let us see the finish!

He he, I want to set the record straight and say he’s really not my husband. He’s our good friend who happens to be much handier than my husband. And yes, my husband knows…I can have a sardonic sense of humor:)

Wow! The tile looks great on the floor, I love the hexagon shape! And I really love the glass tile as well! Good luck!

The floor tile is wow! I can’t wait to see the whole bathroom! The new tub is looking fab, too!

Sorry, but I’m not a fan of those tiles. The look is too busy to me and against that octagon neutral, it looks dated unless of course you’re going for an updated retro look. Just my opinion… don’t hate me… ;-)

Of course I don’t hate you! Especially for being honest. Come back and vote no, I added a poll, my first one…

I’m sorry, but I have to agree with Chandy. Think about all of your walls covered with this. It might be a little busy/overwhelming. Glad that Kel is a help. The pilot mindset does come in handy, even when he isn’t flying! The bathroom is looking good!

Beautiful flooring! My brother in law is very detailed also. He’s an engineer. LOL!

I love the white beadboard look. I want it in every room of my house!

I’m not a fan of the tile on the walls. I think it would be too much in that room. Could you try to pull out some of the beige tones in the floor to paint the walls with? I’m wondering if the Nester’s Tobacco Road would look good or not?

Good luck with your bathroom remodel, it’s coming along nicely!

Puna, I am sorry, I don’t like that tile. I have a buddy who owns a tile company, perhaps you can hit his showroom.

I would be worried that a large wall area with that tile would look too busy. The floor looks awesome! Your new man is good! heehee

I LOVE the floor! The glass tile is beautiful, but I would be afraid that covering such a large area would be a little overwhelming. Why not do an accent wall with it?

Truthfully I have to say no, they’re just a little bit too 70s. I might like them in small doses – in fact as a splashback they might be really nice.

The rest of it looks great though :)

I love the tile, but I’m afraid of what it will look like over beadboard…and in a large amounts…it’s almost like two different styles. The tile being glass and mosaic, almost modern..the beadboard, kinda cottage/traditional. If I had to vote, I would probably find something to coordinate with what you put on the floor…more “stoney”-that looks great. Hope I wasn’t too brutal! :) Any remodel undertaking is quite a task, can’t wait to see to end result…you’ll make the right decision.

i like it. it will have a fabulous look but you will need to be very minimalist with whatever else goes in the bathroom. everything monochromatic. no colour.

  19. June 15, 2009 at 8:23 am

I love the floor accent! Not a fan of the brown tile. I think because of the 70s color and it might be too trendy to permanently put in your bathroom. If you want to keep the same look, try a similar tile in a lighter shade like Malaga Cove Teak Silk Mosaic tile. I would love to post your before & after pics on my site when your done!

Puna, the flooring looks fantastic, kudos to your husband and the friend who helped…the colors in the glass times are beautiful…great accent colors….my vote tho is that the tiles are also a little busy…may take away from the design of the bathroom…I am looking forward to seeing it done too…your whole house is so beautiful. :o ) Maria

Puna, I bet you’re so happy to get this project done! I like the mosaic tile, but do think it would be very busy on the whole wall. Maybe 6″ tiles matching the large tiles on the floor with accents of the mosaic tile – say a strip around the mirror or a 6″ band around the upper wall. The floor looks wonderful!

  24. June 15, 2009 at 9:50 am

I love the little tiles.. but I’m not sure I’d like them on a large area. I actually looked at the same ones this weekend .. was thinking of using them on a old singer sewing machine top I just found. But decided to go with a granite top. Good luck on finishing your bath.. it looks wonderful so far.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! Your bathroom is looking great! I love those tiles, but I do think they are a bit busy (and small) to use for the whole wall above the beadboard. Good luck!

    • Puna said,

Thank you Christy! I went by your blog to look at your bathroom and I like the little shells pressed again the plaster in the wall. Should I ditch the tile idea all together and do that instead? Am I a ninny for not being able to make up my mind?

  26. Marie said,

Your bathroom is fabulous! I have to be honest though and say that I’m not crazy about the tiles – maybe it’s the shades of color against the floor tiling that isn’t blending well for me? Too brown? I love the shell idea!

Huge fan of the honeycomb floor tiles, in fact, when tile-browsing (many moons ago) my husband pointed out that design as one he likes. Since we might embark on his bathroom soon, I’m thrilled to see yours ‘in person’.
Regarding the other tile choice, I quite like them, but I think only in small quantities. Other comments seem to be saying, don’t cover the whole area in them, maybe just use them sparingly, and I think that’s how I would vote too….
The point about the different styles of mosaic vs beadboard is spot on.

  28. June 15, 2009 at 11:19 am

It’s coming along great! I have a bathroom that’s desperately in need of an overhaul. Can I borrow your man? I like your tile, but the practical side of me is…is it easy to keep clean?

    • Puna said,

And yes, it’s easy to clean, I think the tile is easier than the vinyl that was old and cracked that was there before…

Puna, I love the floor w/ the bead board. The tiles are beautiful, but they are goijng to clash. If you were/are going to paint the walls one of the tones in the tiles, then why not use them in the tub area as a 5″ border abou thte height of the top of the waiscoating? Not sure what type of mirror you are using. If is going to be fixed to the wall, you could always surround it in a border of the tile. K

  31. June 15, 2009 at 2:17 pm

lucky you. he did a fantastic job!!on the floor and i love beaded board but personally i feel like that tiny tile might be a bit too much on the entire wall – maybe it just goes behind the tub area. just my opinion though.

Wow that floor is beautiful ! I think the busy tile may take away from the clean lines of the wainscoating and floor…..just my 2 cents….. Otherwise
the bathroom is huge and very nice – I am jealous ! Do what you want to
do – I know it takes a while but you will be happy when it is done !

You have got a major transormation happening there. As for the little brown tiles, check the country living web site, am sure i have seen something similar on there recently and with all the other things they had going on it atiny bathroom, it looked rather nice.
